Years ago I took Kevin and Mark on a grand adventure. We left the Oz Camp and drove to the mouth of the river. About 5 hours each way. We saw no signs of humans until we reached the mouth of the river. There was a small group of commercial fisherman and no one else for hundreds of miles.

We had lunch at the at the first clear tributary below a big glacial tributary from the south. While having lunch we caught a few nice Rainbows some Dolly Varden and Kevin hooked a monster that broke off 20 pound leader. Probably a big King Salmon as we had already caught a number upstream and earlier.

After lunch unbeknownst to them I ran up the North Ozernaya tributary in my little jet boat. We went a half a mile, under the boat from bank to bank, top to bottom is a swirling mass of thousands of 12-18 pound Chum Salmon. After a half of a mile they thinned out and I stopped, while Mark made one cast and catches a 2 foot Rainbow trout. By the time we were landing it we had floated down far enough that it was a mass of thrashing Chum Salmon as far as we could see. I said let’s go.

Didn’t matter if it was a mouse, parachute Adams or a streamer. Every fish bit the fly. Crystal clear and emanating from a series of big springs it is perhaps the most delicious water I have ever tasted. Brad was having a challenge getting the hook in the fish. But catching one every cast is in all actuality quite boring. I wonder how many he missed this day?
